Forecasting and estimation of agricultural production in Europe : Applications of remote sensing in the MARS project
In support to the Agriculture Division of the Commission of the European Communities, the MARS project is currently developing a system for the time forecasting and estimation of the production of Europe's most important crops. Based on ground observations, meteorological data and satellite images of medium and high resolution, the system is integrating the results already available from the four actions of the MARS project, started in 1988. At present, the regional inventories and the European rapid estimates have reached a pre-operational stage, while the last two components of the system, crop yield forecasting and monitoring of conditions of vegetation are still under development. The outputs of the system consists of yield and crop acreage assessments and qualitative crop state monitoring.
