Application of remote sensing to operational problems within the European Communities' sectorial policies
The Commission of the European Communities (CEC) has responsibilities for the management of sectorial policies in a range of fields, including agriculture, environment, aid to development, regional policy and fisheries. To undertake this task, timely, accurate information is needed on an operational basis. This paper describes how data from remote sensing sensors can contribute to this information requirement using examples of semi-operational projects in the domains of agricultural statistics, tropical forest mapping and monitoring, biomass burning, and land use and land degradation monitoring.
