The sterols of three BCR-reference materials - a blend of soya and maize oils (RM 162), a mixture of pig and beef fats (RM 163), and anhydrous milk fat (RM 164) - were identified by GC-MS in two experienced laboratories, each following its own analytical procedure. The highly efficient HPLC method used by one laboratory detected many minor components in addition to those identified by the classical TLC procedure used by the other laboratory, to isolate the sterols from the unsaponifiable matter. Only the sterols similarly identified by both laboratories were taken into account for final certification. This article presents the results of the certification study together with the interpretation of mass spectra.
