Multivariate structure-environmental fate relationships for chlorinated chemicals
A universally accepted procedure for assessing the environmental fate of chemicals is not presently available. However, much effort is being directed towards developing conceptual models which simulate the behaviour of the pollutants in the biosphere. The Fugacity Model Level III is a realistic model, introducing interphase transfer resistances in a non-equilibrium system. The environmental distribution of nine chlorinated compounds was estimated from this model and graphically analysed by means of correspondence factor analysis (CFA). The results allowed the establishment of structure-environmental fate relationships mainly governed by the physicochemical properties of the molecules.
