State of the art NiO cathodes suffer from a serious dissolution into the carbonate melt, thus limiting the lifetime of a MCFC. The two approaches to solve this problem are: (i) the improvement of NiO cathodes and adjustment of the electrolyte composition (acidity/basicity) for minimum dissolution; (ii) the development of alternative cathode materials. The aim of this project was to clarify the oxygen reduction mechanism in various molten carbonate melts on gold, NiO, LiFeO(2) and other cathode materials. It was also hoped that adequate mathematical modelling would be achieved and hence both an improved understanding and optimisation of the cathode performance would result.
