This publication is one of a series resulting from the EC Concerted Action project on health services and avoidable deaths. The purpose of the atlas is to provide an indicator to aspects of health services provision where a problem may exist and where future investigation is needed. Twelve countries participated in this study which was concerned with avoidable mortality from the following eight conditions in particular: (i) intestinal infections; (ii) breast cancer; (iii) skin cancer; (iv) cancer of the testis; (v) leukaemias; (vi) ischaemic heart disease; (vii) peptic ulcers; (viii) congenital cardiovascular anomalies. Maps and histograms are presented for each of the countries involved and suggestions are made for future action.
