The emergence of new technologies, the moves in organisational skills, the changing market demands, the rising awareness of the European public concerning environmental and social issues and the institutional changes in the framework conditions caused by the Internal Market legislation are forcing the European enterprises to reconsider their logistics. The main objectives of this project, launched by the CEC in 1991, were: (i) to assess Internal Market implications; (ii) to identify critical issues; (iii) the definition of S&T tasks; (iv) the identification of any additional RTD policy actions. This study has identified the internationalisation of logistic activities, the externalisation of logistic functions and the centralisation of logistic facilities as major trends that enterprises in Europe will generally follow in the long-term, despite sectoral and individual differences.
