The supply of electrical energy to isolated utilities, usually made by means of diesel-electric generators, is very costly, both in terms of energy and money. It is necessary, therefore, to exploit fully the sources of energy available locally, without jeopardising the continuity of service and the quality of the electrical energy produced. For that reason, Aeritalia has designed and developed a wind-diesel integrated system of the POSH (power-sharing) type, which displays innovative features and whose 20 kW demonstrator unit has been installed in Calabria. A detailed description is given of the system and its operating principles, with special attention to the cybernetics of the latching and unlatching of the various active groups in different wind/load conditions. This report also covers the extensive tests carried out, both on the rig and in the field, of the main components and of the integrated system, and includes a presentation of the most significant test results.
