Geomechanics and support of galleries on complex geological structures
This report deals with the geomechanics and roof support of the Germunde mine, Portugal, and covers the first phase of a research programme. The geomechanical characterisation of the mine's rock-mass was given particular attention and a geomechanical classification system was developed for the optimisation of supports to be installed. The parameters used for that system were the existing rock types, their properties as obtained by laboratory tests and the characteristics of the discontinuities; to obtain these a computer program was developed to process data from scan-line surveys. The applicability of this method was confirmed by a test case, which is described. This was used to predict the types of supports needed for an area of the mine's deepest level. Also in the report additional considerations on other ongoing aspects of the research programme are offered, such as convergence data processing, the study and optimisation of alternative support types, new mine instrumentation and the treatment of information that is expected to result from it.
