Corrosion of low-lying steel in seawater
Steels containing (wt. %) 0.25 - 1.6 Si, 0.03 - 1.0 Al, 0 - 13 Cr and 0 - 0.3 Cu were tested with regard to uniform corrosion attack in the immersion, tidal and splash zones off Helgoland and on land-mounted racks exposed to marine, rural and urban air, as well as with regard to stress-corrosion cracking in seawater. In the latter tests the immersion zone off Helgoland and a 30 bar pressure vessel were used. The test pieces were exposed both to free corrosion and to cathodic protection afforded by zinc anodes.
