Abstract

The possibility of partial electrochemical hydrogenation of coal prior to its pyrolysis is investigated, with the aim of increasing gas and oil efficiency. The principal objective was to determine whether a cathodic pretreatment in an aqueous solution of tetrabutylammonium hydroxide breaks bonds in the coal structure by adding hydrogen atoms. Secondly, the possibility of an electrochemical hydrogenation of polyaromatic compounds was investigated. These may be intended for cracking for the production of BTX or PCX, or for use as hydrogen donor solvents for coal liquefaction processes.
