Pressure filters are an efficient means of de-watering flotation tailings in coal preparation plants. However their operation is not continuous, and is labour intensive, particularly for cake discharge. The object of this work was to reduce manpower involvement and increase consistency of operation from one cycle to another. At Bolsover colliery, a cake release device working in conjunction with an automatic cloth washing machine was introduced, together with a new cloth design having the backing cloth sewn to the face cloth, and an automatic filter control system. At Coventry colliery, work centred on the evaluation of the use of lime as a filtration enhancer and on the unaided discharge of cakes, through a change of filter cloth and automatic, efficient cloth washing.
