Minestone is the coarse waste produced from coal mining and it is derived from all the rock types associated with the coal measures. The major commercial outlet for minestone in the UK has been in the civil engineering industry where it has been used in bulk fill applications such as highway embankments and land reclamation schemes. Minestone also has commercial potential for use in marine environments, such as fill for dry docks, land reclamation, sea defences and barrage schemes, provided it can be shown to be suitable on technical grounds. In this study, a preliminary evaluation of the behaviour of UK minestone was carried out to provide background information to aid the development of outlets for minestone in such applications. Six minestones were examined in the programme and, prior to the testwork, they were characterised in terms of their physical, chemical and mineralogical properties.
