  • Limitations and constraints in the production of cast iron with low silicon, sulphur and nitrogen content : Optimisation of operating conditions of the blast furnace


This project aimed to define quantitative and qualitative limitations and constraints on the production of cast iron of low silicon, sulphur and nitrogen content, and to provide blast furnace operators with a set of precise rules for process optimisation. An algorithm was developed with which to calculate the partition coefficient of alloy constituents between the metal and slag. After presenting the experimental methods and their limitations, the report describes how the algorithm was tested on a series of consecutive castings, and how it can be used to determine the range of metal qualities attainable under given limiting conditions such as blast pressure, slag composition, and alkali content of the burden. As influences on the distribution of constituents - silicon and sulphur in particular - do not always work in the same direction, the algorithm provides a way of identifying the conditions associated with optimum composition.
