The objective of this research was to develop top covers for ash disposal sites and so ensure an environmentally and economically acceptable method of disposal. The aim of this project was to show whether the percolating water would decrease to a negligible amount when a layer of top soil with plant cover was added. This report describes the results of the full-scale tests of the capillary barrier during the two test periods 1985-89 and 1989-91. The test site, situated at Botterup, north of Copenhagen, was divided into five sections 20 m x 15 m with slopes from 2 % to 10 %. Different materials were used in the sections. During the first test period the site was divided into two halves, while in the second period it was divided into five sections with two of these covered by a top soil with grass.
