Abstract

This paper outlines a methodology being used for the development of decision support systems for environmental management. Because of the nature of the problem the proposed methodology links geographical information systems with techniques from the field of multicriteria decision aid. The application of the methodology to the problem of industrial waste management in the Lombardy region of Northern Italy is described. The decision support system described includes a scenario generation module which uses different heuristics to generate different future scenarios for the disposal of the region's wastes. These scenarios may then be evaluated for environmental impacts, costs and risks, making use of spatial analyses performed using the Geographical Information System (GIS). Results of these evaluations may then be passed to the multi-criteria decision aid module which ranks the generated scenarios.
