Laser melting of materials
The purpose of this work is to study the influence of surface tension Marangoni flows on the shape and depth of laser-melted pools. A two-dimensional transient computer program has been developed which models the depths and flows of molten layers produced when a high energy beam strikes the surface of a material. The model is based on the finite volume method, which solves the coupled transient equations of motion and energy for a 2D axi-symmetric geometry.
