Agro-climatic zonation of grape sugar content in the EC
The MARS Project of the JRC is contributing to a project to develop a zonation of EC wine growing areas based on grape sugar content derived from an agrometeorological model. The algorithm implemented in the model derives the sugar content on the basis of the length of the ripening period, water balance at harvest, the temperature throughout the season and the date of flowering (itself based on latitude and temperature), and was developed on the basis of 800 observations collected from a set of sample sites representing the range of climatic conditions found in the wine growing areas of the EC. Several versions of the model were applied to a database containing daily meteorological data for 30 years at over 350 stations as well as to mean meteorological data for additional stations. The model outputs were submitted to an interpolation procedure in Arc/Info.
