Characterization of reference tetramethylurea (TMU) for the determination of H/D ratio in alcohols by SNIF-NMR
The Community analytical method for the determination of the enrichment of wine by the addition of sugar is based on the measurement of the isotopic ratio H/D by nuclear magnetic resonance of an alcohol distillate of wine. In this study, three ethanols of different botanical origins were sealed in NMR tubes with a known quantity of tetramethylurea (TMU) used as a reference. This report describes the determination of deuterium isotope ratios, the methods of calibration of different batches of TMU, and the calibration of TMU by mass spectrometry. Results produced were satisfactory.
