The concept of a hydrogen-based, clean, renewable energy system is currently being investigated by European and Canadian industry, under the supervision of the Joint Research Centre, Ispra. The purpose of the 100 MW pilot project is to demonstrate the provision of clean and renewable energy in the form of Canadian hydropower converted via electrolysis into hydrogen and shipped to Europe where it is to be stored and used in different ways: (i) electricity/heat cogeneration; (ii) vehicle and aviation propulsion; (iii) hydrogen enrichment of natural gas for use in households or in industry. This paper includes a description of the detailed system definition and hydrogen application demonstration programme phases of the project. The economic and environmental aspects of the project are also presented and the need for a reduction in costs is emphasised.
