Verification technology in an evolving nuclear environment
The dismantling of nuclear warheads and the potential transfer of the nuclear materials to the civilian fuel cycle for its use in peaceful applications are among the important changes in the nuclear environment. The consequences of this reutilisation of U and Pu will be important from the economic point of view. Its impact for the safeguarding of this nuclear material has to be evaluated not only from the institutional, legal and procedural point of view but also regarding the use, adaptation or development of verification technology. This paper considers this latter subject and compares some existing safeguards technology with potential future needs.
