The use of containment and surveillance (C/S) techniques for the implementation of nuclear safeguards has increased substantially in recent years. The LaSCo laboratory (Laboratory for Surveillance and Containment), based at the JRC Ispra, was established with the following objectives: (i) performance assessment of C/S devices and systems; (ii) the demonstration and development of effective procedures for proper use of C/S in specific applications; (iii) the training of users for the application of different techniques. LaSCo's testing facilities are presently composed of a thermal area and a mechanical area. This paper describes current activities relating to performance assessment.
