The problems of quality control of the data in air pollution monitoring networks are identified. Among the parameters influencing the quality of the measurements, those depending on the sampling, on the analysis and also on the structure and management of the whole network are noted. Three procedures for the evaluation of data quality in the EC air pollution monitoring networks are described. The first one proposes the test of the analysers by means of a standard gas-cylinder mixture sent to different specialised laboratories. The second concerns the simultaneous intercomparison of different calibration and analysis methods in a special diluter-mixer calibration bench (the nitrogen dioxide directive). Finally, spot checks at network monitoring stations by means of a mobile laboratory are carried out to test the quality of the routine measurements.
