ICP-MS for fissile material analysis in highly radioactive samples
Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) has been used to determine radioactive nuclides in different matrices with an accuracy of 0.5 to 10 %. Instruments adapted to the analysis of radioactive samples are applied for the determination of fissile material in highly active liquid waste and in dissolved spent fuel residues of reprocessing. For highly radioactive solids the laser ablation technique is used. Examples are described and the results compared with other techniques (TIMS).
