The overall aim of the research is to contribute, through a targeted programme of applied precompetitive research, to the development of improved materials for power engineering applications. In order to manage the programme effectively, the work was organised into packages with specified targets. These packages include: (i) reliability in steam turbines; (ii) heat exchangers for coal conversion technology; (iii) disc alloys for gas turbines; (iv) high temperature tribology coatings; (v) clean combustion technologies. The activities of the various work packages and the results achieved are illustrated using highlights taken from representative areas.
