Frequent and often serious chemical accidents are due to runaway reactions. The basic phenomenology and the prime causes which lead to runaways, as well as the prevention measures that should be adopted, are reviewed in this report. In addition, the plant protection and the accident mitigation methods, which must be enforced in case of occurrence of a runaway, are discussed. Finally, an assessment strategy for chemical reaction hazards is outlined.
