Abstract

For future progress in heavy ion fusion, the physics and design of indirectly driven targets are important issues. Arguments are given for the various possibilities for target designs. The coupling efficiency of indirectly driven targets is then discussed, and some basic formulae are given for orientation. An analysis is given of converter elements which are of stretched cylindrical shape, at least for higher ion energies. A simulation of a typical case is then presented, with emphasis on the specific deposition power required for high conversion efficiency. Analytical results are given for the scaling of conversion efficiency and, finally, the gain of heavy ion targets is discussed.
