The electronic structure of Pu-metal : An X-ray and high resolution UV photoemission study
It has been claimed that delta-Pu (fcc) represents the case of localisation of the 5f electrons. In order to investigate this, the Pu 4f core levels have been measured at 70 K by X-ray photoemission (XPS), and the valence band has been measured by high resolution UV photoemission (HRUPS). The 4f core levels show only a weak satellite on the high binding energy side of the main asymmetric line of alpha-Pu, indicating only slight localisation of 5f electrons. The valence band spectra of delta-Pu demonstrate pronounced narrowing of the 5f band at E(F), giving nearly perfect agreement with recent fully relativistic band structure calculations.
