Magnetic diagnostic on ASDEX Upgrade with internal and external pick-up coils
The aims of the ASDEX Upgrade include control of the non-circular bulk plasma configuration and control of the plasma boundary or divertor configuration, for which an exact measurement and adjustment of magnetic fields is required. In many instances, local measurements in one poloidal plane are sufficient; in some cases, toroidally distributed Mirnov coils and flux loops are necessary. This report describes the principles of measurements, the design of the measuring elements including special manufacturing methods, the choice and design of special cables, of connections and feed-through elements. The data acquisition system is described and the formulae for evaluation of all electric and physical quantities are given. This report covers especially those details of design, material and electrical component selection which can help designers of similar machines (ITER, NET) in future.
