  • On the use of a component event database for the estimation of components' reliability parameters with particular reference to components with zero failures

Components operating in NPPs are highly reliable; they experience relatively few failures even for long periods of observation, and estimation procedures for their reliability parameters are Bayesian in character. This paper proposes a nonparametric empirical Bayes estimator for the failure rate of components on which raw data on times-operated and times-to-failure are available, as they are in component event databases. The proposed estimator generalises for the case of different times of observation, an estimator proposed very early in empirical Bayes estimation. The estimator is seen to be asymptotically unbiased. The estimation procedure is implemented on a dataset typical of samples drawn from a component event database.
