Abstract

The main objective of the investigations was the quality assessment and calibration of image-data. This required a set of targets of known radar scattering behaviour, distributed over the imaged area in such a way as to allow accurate analysis and calibration of the system response. The Institute for Remote Sensing Applications of the Joint Research Centre, in the frame of the project on international forest investigation, selected the area of Freiburg Black Forest as a calibration site for the ERS-1 data. A set of three active radar calibrators (ARCs) were deployed on five dates, four weeks apart, with a location accuracy of 5 m. The first results show good agreement with the expected theoretical values of the impulse response function characteristics for the precision image product (PRI), while single look complex data sets (SLC) processed at the German PAF presented saturation phenomena.
