Pressure effects upon the magnetization of actinide compounds
The effect of pressure upon the magnetism in several actinide compounds is explored. The magnetism of actinide compounds is characterised by a large orbital contribution to the magnetisation. The orbital moment is often larger than the spin moment and it may be more sensitive to pressure. It is possible that, at high pressure, the spin and orbital contribution to the total moment cancel. The dependence of intra-atomic and inter-atomic exchange interactions upon volume is discussed and calculated for UO(2). Finally the magnetic ordering temperature of UO(2) is estimated.
