The potential of stimulated backward Raman scattering is investigated in relation to efficient energy transfer from a long iodine laser pulse of 100-200 ps duration to a short Stokes pulse of a few picoseconds duration. The result of the pilot experiment and a theoretical analysis of the Raman process show that the scheme is scalable to large energies and thus is suitable for the generation of strong Stokes pulses whose power exceeds that of the pump pulses.
