Ultrasonic non-destructive testing of impact damage in composite materials
This report describes the techniques and methods used to perform ultrasonic non-destructive tests on samples of composite structures with a thermosetting epoxy matrix and carbon or glass fibre, in both laminated and sandwiched form. A description is given, for each sample, of the methods used to build a high resolution ultrasound image to show the actual extent of the damaged area. Experimental results are given and the equipment and calibration methods needed to ensure the correct capture of ultrasonic data are described. Reference is also made to the application of these techniques to both samples and actual assemblies during civil certification tests for components of the Agusta-Westland EH101 helicopter.
