Abstract

Recently, the need to test full-scale prototypes of earthquake protection devices has increased. Such tests may be needed for reasons of quality control or verification of analytical performance calculations, before installation takes place. Alternatively, those already in place may be temporarily taken out of service and re-tested to monitor their performance after extended in-service conditions. This paper describes the main characteristics of the new structural mechanics laboratory (ELSA) at the Joint Research Centre. Its application in the field of energy dissipation and vibration isolation of structures, in particular using the pseudodynamic (PSD) method, is also discussed.
