RF heating and current drive on Tore Supra : Status, results and approach to stationary discharges
Two RF systems are currently operational on Tore Supra, an LHCD system and an ICRH system. A third system (ECRH) is under development. The ICRH antenna and LHCD grill have demonstrated the capability to achieve high RF power densities and the possibility of long pulse operation. Significant experimental results have been obtained concerning the resistive flux saving efficiency, the heating, the current drive and current profile control. Simulations suggest that it may be possible to achieve a pulse of several minutes on Tore Supra at moderate density (0.2 x 1.0 E20/m3) with the existing LHCD system, and at high density (0.5 x 1.0 E20/m3) if the LH injected power is increased to 15 MW.
