In the context of nuclear transmutation of minor actinides the compound (U(0.5)Am(0.5))0(2-x) has been studied by X-ray diffraction, oxygen potential measurement, XPS and magnetic measurements. According to these results the compound in question should rather be formulated as americium uranate AmUO(4-Y), since Am proved to be in the trivalent oxidation state, not as expected from analogy with (U(0.5)Pu(0.5))0(2-x) where Pu is tetravalent, whereas uranium was tetra- and pentavalent.
