Abstract

Using the measurement method and instrumentation employed in measurements for the redetermination of the Avogadro constant (which so far is the best realisation of the mole in the laboratory), the isotope abundances and atomic weights of oxygen and nitrogen have been measured by isotope mass spectrometry on pure gases and on air using a Finnigan MAT 271 gas mass spectrometer. For oxygen a value of 15.999 408 (pure oxygen) and 15.999 449 (oxygen in air) has been obtained, while for nitrogen 14.006 669 (pure nitrogen) and 14.006 654 (nitrogen in air) was found. All isotope abundances and atomic weights compare favourably to the IUPAC recommended values. The quoted uncertainties have been computed on a 1 s basis.
