Abstract

A topping cycle process based on partial gasification of coal in a pressurised fluidised bed gasifier (PFBG) with combustion of residual char in either a circulating (CFBC) or pressurised (PFBC) fluidised bed combustor is being developed. The aim of this project was to investigate the mechanisms governing the operability and performance of this process. Studies into the chemical mechanisms within the gasifier were carried out, providing information on reaction rates, and also on how particle size and temperature affect properties of the char. Cold model studies were also used to investigate the fluidisation properties of the gasifier bed. A simple thermodynamic model was developed which calculates the fuel gas composition from an atmospheric gasifier from chemical equilibrium considerations. An existing spouted gasifier model was extended to cover the deep beds used in the British Coal concept, to predict carbon conversion, product gas properties, gas composition and temperature profiles in the reactor. A more sophisticated mathematical model of the pressurised gasifier was subsequently developed to predict gas yields, temperature profiles, elutriation rates and particle population of the bed.
