Most human-machine systems today are so complex that the user is not able intuitively to understand and control them. Procedures are therefore required to ensure safe and efficient functioning in normal situations as well as during contingency operation. The paper describes a software tool, the System Response Generator, which has been developed for this purpose, and which combines a simulation of the process with a simulation of the operator carrying out the procedure. The application of this SRG to procedure testing is outlined.
