Agricultural field limits change detection
The setting-up of an integrated system as a management and verification tool for the new Common Agricultural Policy of the European Community requires an evaluation of the need for updating cartographic references used for claiming agricultural subsidies. Remote sensing is used as a system for mapping certain agricultural practices. Data from Action 4 (MARS Project) were found useful for meeting the above mentioned needs. Topological features and spatial analysis capabilities from GIS (ARC-INFO) were used. A statistical approach compared the evolution of a number of plots and their mean size over the last 4 years. A cartographic analysis method based on overlaid rasters was used to overcome the inaccuracy of digitised photo-interpreted data from satellite images. The cartographic comparison was automated in order to process a large volume of data.
