Mechanical testing of CMCs at high temperatures : Design considerations and performance of a uniaxial test facility
This paper presents an overview of the requirements which have to be fulfilled in order to perform reliable mechanical testing on advanced materials at high temperatures. The factors controlling the design and implementation of a uniaxial test setup are discussed. The interaction between the solutions adopted for the different parts of the facility is stressed. The realisation and performances of a high temperature uniaxial mechanical test facility for continuous fibre reinforced ceramic matrix composites are then described in more detail, and illustrated by means of the results from creep tests performed on a ceramic matrix composite.
