Development of an expert system to predict the phenomenon of break-outs of steel at the end level of the mould in continuous casting

The managers of continuous casting machines aim to minimise the number of incidents in the production tool in order to increase the productivity and the efficiency of the installation. This research is based particularly on the incidence of break-outs of steel at the end level of the mould. Different break-out detection systems have been used on slab casters. The most effective one was the analysis of temperature signals of a multitude of thermocouples spread at different levels of the mould. Little information is available on tests with continuous casters for blooms or billets. The aims of this research are: (i) development of a measuring technique of the cupper temperature of the mould; (ii) acquisition of know-how for the knowledge database of a future expert system in order to predict the break-outs of steel with a minimum number of sensors. The practical work of the research was carried out at the continuous casting machine of AES with the collaboration of the different local departments. The test series was based on the acquisition of more than 64 characteristic parameters and 3600 charges.
