Abstract

The technology of pelletisation had been established previously for the reconstitution of coal fines into coarser sizes to improve flow. A prototype plant was built at the South Side Coal Preparation Plant and commissioned in 1988. It successfully produced pellets at the required rate. Considerable effort was devoted to pelletisation binder trials. Investigations also showed that by adding pellets to power station fuel, fuel handlability was improved. Overall the project achieved its technical objectives but, due to a dramatic change in market conditions, it is difficult to envisage exploitation of the technology and no further research is to be undertaken.
