Anaerobic treatment of paper-mill waste water in a mixed film fluidized bed reactor using a mineral carrier
The demonstration project deals with the construction of a decontamination plant, in which the effluents from a paper mill producing paper for corrugated cardboard are treated by methane fermentation; this process is applied in an innovative fluidised bed reactor which allows energy recovery instead of involving energy expense as in conventional aerobic decontamination processes. This plant has shown its capacity for treating the pollution generated by the paper mill; 35 kg COD/m3/day was reached with no adverse effect on pollution elimination efficiency. The process makes a significant contribution to energy savings and environmental protection. It is not only applicable in the paper industry but also in other sectors such as the agro-food, chemical or pharmaceutical industries.
