Alternative animals for fibre productionFunded under: FP2-CAMAR
This publication presents the papers and discussions, in three sessions, of a workshop on the competitiveness of agriculture and management of agricultural resources. Session I covers fibre characteristics and biology and discusses speciality fibres and markets for rabbits, camels, goats (mohair, cashmere, cashgora), yak and buffalo and South American camelids, fibre properties and measurement methods, the biology of fibre growth and shedding, and the genetics of fibre production in cashmere goats. Session II covers animal management and includes papers on aspects of the reproductive biology of sheep, goats and camelids, the foraging ecology of fibre producing ruminant species, wasting diseases in sheep and goats in Mediterranean countries, and the development of management systems. Session III covers future potential and discusses the economics of fibre production.
