Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

The workshop brought together practical expertise from various scientific disciplines of relevance to good agricultural practice in relation to recent and planned Community legislation at the interface between agriculture and the environment (COM(91)415). Topics covered include problems emanating from current agricultural practice and those farming practices likely to reduce the polluting effects of agriculture, and to conserve or re-establish biodiversity and quality in the agro-ecosystem and countryside environment. Scientifically-based standards have been identified to meet the requirements for a medium-term reductionist approach. Additionally, principles have been established within ecological whole-system approaches, directed towards stepwise replacement of off-farm inputs by integration of natural regulatory processes, on-farm alternatives and management skills, in order to maintain species and landscape diversity, minimise pollution and losses, provide safe and wholesome food supply and sustain income.
