More than 50 years after the discovery of the fission process, investigations into nuclear fission induced by neutrons is still an important field of research. This survey presents the most recent theoretical and experimental results and their contribution to the understanding of the fission process. The focus is on selected topics of fission fragment characteristics, such as high resolution studies, odd-even effects and fission of odd-charge nuclei. New instrumental development, in particular the rediscovery of the ionisation chamber, is also highlighted.
