Abstract

Tropical deforestation represents one of the most significant changes in land surface conditions of the last decade. Biomass burning which is often associated with deforestation and agricultural or pastoral activities is an important factor which significantly influences land surface conditions and atmospheric chemistry. This paper shows how remote sensing techniques can be used operationally to monitor and assess these phenomena at regional and global levels.
