Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

HYPP (Hypermedia for Plant Protection) is a hypermedia information system on CD-ROM where, for the first time, basic knowledge on weeds, plant diseases and pests will be stored, with the aim to assist farmers, agricultural advisors and industries, agricultural schools and universities in their identification. HYPP data bank combines specialised texts with explanatory drawings and high quality photographs of more than 600 weeds, 350 pests and 400 pathogens which affect over 60 types of cultured plants all over Europe. The whole CD-ROM contains more than 1300 articles, over 5000 photographs and 1000 drawings and a glossary with about 1000 terms. In order to identify problems on the basis of samples, users will be able to get access to information via three different modes: the guided mode for learning, the query mode for specialists and the key word access (hyper text). The information system will be implemented in the six most widely-spoken languages of the EC (English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish). This paper describes the contents of the system, the user platform, authors' copyright problems and the methodology employed in the development of the system.
